Many of our environmental problems can be tracked to the hubris of humans, who are poor stewards of the real estate we call Earth. Humanity may be defined as “we,” but in fact “we” is all living beings and ecosystems, since we are so interdependent. For too long we have defined the world only in terms of ourselves—and often in narrow terms of a small population in a small geographical area.

It’s time we defined future generations as “we” and stop thinking of generation “me”—entirely.

Class 4 Fellow Tania Pulido will be recognized as one of seven Brower Youth Award winners by the Earth Island Institute

next month. Tania is being honored for her leadership in community development and food security in Richmond, California. She not only has dedicated herself to improving her community through her work at Urban Tilth, but also documents community struggles and solutions through media at Youth Movement Records‘ program at the RYSE Center.

When Tania joined Urban Tilth, she had little experience working in a garden. The organization recognized her incredible leadership ability and hired her on as the site coordinator for Berryland Garden, a neglected stretch of the Richmond Greenway. With some positive energy, a willingness to learn and a lot of hard work, Tania is now growing 18 varieties of berries, numerous herbs and even a fig tree in Berryland Garden. She has engaged teens from the community to take ownership of the garden to ensure that it will not fall into disrepair again, and uses the garden as a classroom to increase their knowledge of global environmental issues. The food grown in the garden has supplied the teens and their families with healthy and nutritious options.

Inspired by the civil rights movement to shape up after a drop-out youth, Denis Cunningham got his law degree just in time to cut his teeth in 1968, that momentous year, defending people arrested in riots that followed the murder of Martin Luther King, and protests at the Democratic National Convention. Inspired again by lawyers and organizers working with the NLG, he helped found what is still known and still going strong in Chicago as the People’s Law Office. He likes long cases. His prosecution of the FBI and Chicago Police officers after the deaths of Black Panther leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark lasted 12 years. His defense of 39 prisoners massacred at Attica lasted 29 years. His defense of Earth First! Activist Judi Bari vs the FBI lasted a mere 10 years. But it ended in a victory for Bari (who tragically died of breast cancer during the trial) with a $4.4 million and a repudiation of the charges that the bomb that almost killed her was placed by herself.

Dennis is still out there, looking for another good, juicy, endless case…

Studying plastic pollution on our shorelines and in marine endangered species habitat is the focus of Chris’s current work in marine environmental toxicology. He’s very kid-friendly despite all that.

On April 25 the 7 month series of films called A Place In the World will end with a screening of the 2008 German film The Wave, that dramatizes a real event that happened in Palo Alto CA at Cubberley High School in the 60′s. Ron Jones, the Palo Alto teacher who was involved in the event will be there to speak to students after.

As a help to understanding the impact the event had on the students at the time we are posting this 30 minute interview CFI Education Director John Morrison did on Marin Community TV with the director of a documentary. Lesson Plan, on the event (who was also a student then) as well as Ron Jones and many other students who were part of the original event.

Project Jatropha is an international nonprofit collaboration dedicated to promoting the plant Jatropha curcas as an ecologically friendly and economically sustainable source of biofuel beginning in rural India and eventually in other developing countries where the project can be applied.

Under Adarsha and his sister Apoorva’s co -leadership the team has planted close to 40,000 Jatropha, Teak, Silver Oak, Pongamia and other useful forestry saplings . The project involves youth from 33 rural schools and farmer leaders from 14 villages in Karnataka. He has won several national and international awards such as Gloria Barron Prize, Brower Youth Award, International Young Eco Hero Award, and Outstanding Youth Achiever recognition. Under his leadership the team also has won a Presidential Environmental Youth Award and T4PE Gold Service Award etc (www.projectjatropha.com).

Adarsha serves on the ACE Youth Advisory Board in order to motivate youth across the globe about the importance of Climate Change. He hopes that environmentally conscious youth across the globe can spearhead a movement that will eventually mitigate climate change from CO2 emission and decrease the dependence on fossil fuels.

The annual Brower Youth Awards honor six young people across North America for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy. Earth Island Institute established the Brower Youth Awards in 2000 to honor founder and legendary environmental activist, David R. Brower.

Running Time – 83 min.

The Fourth Revolution: Energy Autonomy describes the possibility to switch to 100% renewables within the next 30 years . It demonstrates the opportunities which will be provided by the energy revolution regarding sustainable economic development and social and economic fairness. A visionary film, arguing that through energy autonomy we can positively influence the balance of power and distribute capital more equitably -we need only do it. This is not a distant dream anymore, but rapidly becoming reality, as Fechner demonstrates presenting practical examples, exemplary projects and the daily work of “green” champions around the globe.

RFC 1

1:00-2:30

Running Time – 55 min.

Dive! follows a group of friends as they dumpster dive in the back alleys and gated garbage receptacles of Los Angeles supermarkets. In the process, they salvage thousands of dollars worth of good food and uncover a disturbing truth about waste in America. The goal quickly becomes to find out why so much edible food is thrown away instead of being delivered to those who need it.

Speaker: Paul Ash is the Executive Director of the San Francisco Food Bank which distributes millions pounds of food throughout San Francisco and Marin County. His commitment to ending hunger in San Francisco and Marin has resulted in the steady growth of the programs, distributing just under 4 million pounds of food when he started in 1989 to the 43.5 million pounds that will be distributed this year. Paul’s background is particularly well-suited to helping the Food Bank distribute more fresh produce per person in poverty than any food bank in the United States: he attended the University of California at Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and worked for several years in agriculture including time spent abroad in agricultural development, before earning his MBA from San Francisco State University. He’s also brought this expertise to helping other Food Banks thrive, through his service on the Feeding America’s Board of Directors, their National Affiliates Council and the California Association of Food Banks. Paul lives in Oakland with his wife and two children.

12:50-1:50

Running Time – 60 min.

16 Decisions follows the women in Bangladesh that are participants in the innovative micro loan programs of the Grameen Bank, led by Nobel Prize Winner, Muhammad Yunus. One of the many goals of Grameen Bank is to help impoverished women escape from the clutches of abject poverty by providing them with low-interest, micro-credit loans. When provided with the loans, the women are requested to make sixteen decisions, which many women take very seriously and which change their lives. Director Gayle Ferraro has just finished a new film on Yunus’s and Grameen’s move into the US to areas of poverty.

Speaker: Jenny Yancey

Jenny and Dan Siegel each bring more than 20 years of experience creating and managing nonprofit organizations and working as consultants, researchers, trainers and writers promoting effective philanthropy and innovation in the nonprofit sector. Their combined history of envisioning and building new infrastructure support models in the philanthropic and nonprofit sector, convening leaders across organizations and sectors, sparking collaborative ventures, advising donors, engaging and working with youth and learning daily as parents makes them well-suited to launch and lead YouthGive.

Yancey and Siegel co-founded New Visions PRD in 1989, an international philanthropic research and development organization that has consulted to major foundations and individual donors, and undertaken cutting edge research to advance philanthropy. In 2003 they co-authored a two-year national study of the donor education field, Philanthropy’s Forgotten Resource? Engaging the Individual Donor, in partnership with the Ford, Hewlett, Kellogg and Packard foundations. Siegel and Yancey have worked with numerous financial advisors on philanthropic giving with clients of wealth, and have personally advised individual donors and families in the creation & development of their strategic giving plans. They live in Mill Valley, CA with their two children, Weezie 14 and Satchel 11, who serve as Youth Marketing consultants to YouthGive.

1:00-2:33

Running Time – 93 min.

Despite the valuable crude oil that flows from the ground beneath their feet, the impoverished villagers of the Niger Delta wage a daily struggle to survive. Their land and water is polluted and the central government has for decades consistently refused to have some of the billions of dollars derived from oil drilling benefit the people and villageswhere the drilling takes place. This documentary journeys to the region to examine the complex powder keg situation that could have drastic local and global effects.

On September 10, there will be a combined sneak preview/teacher seminar of selected Mill Valley Film Festival offerings during the Screenings for Schools program. On the 10th, teachers will have the opportunity to preview clips, learn more about the Mill Valley Film Festival Student Screening selections, and collaborate with other educators around making the festival come alive for our students as part of our curriculum. The CFI Education Teacher Outreach Team consists of Bay Area teachers, SFSU professor Mark Phillips, and CFI Education Director John Morrison, who together plan opportunities for students and teachers to use film effectively in their classes.

Some of the film clips presented at the teacher seminar include Horse Boy, the story of a family’s journey as they travel through Mongolia in search of a mysterious shaman to heal their autistic son; Jermal, an Indonesian film about a young boy on an Oil Derrick searching for his father; Mine, a documentary about saving animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; The Most Dangerous Man in America, a documentary about daniel Ellsberg; Skin, the story of a dark0skinned girl who was born to two white Afrikaner parents in South Africa during the apartheid era; Zombie Girl: the Movie; a documentary about a 12 year old girl who makes zombie films; and Music for the Revolution, a documentary detailing the cohesion of music and the civil rights movement.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the California Film Institute, see the films with other teachers from a variety of district and disciplines, and get your fix of good film in advance of the Mill Valley Film Festival. Your school will need to provide a substitute for the day since you will be out of class. Please RSVP to Michael Levinson, preferably via email at mlvenson@tamdistrict.org or by phone at his classroom at Tamalpais High School, 415-388-3292 ext. 5029.

MY Place, a CFI Education program promoting media literacy through the art of digital storytelling, recruited 8 youths to participate in the first Oakland MY Place workshop. The workshop was facilitated by the Center for Digital Storytelling with KTOP as the editing facilities partner.

The first day of the workshop consists of students and teachers getting to know each other through icebreakers and writing prompts. CDS teachers Gayle Nicholls-Ali, Rasheed Ali and Amy Hill helped the students writer their stories and record their voice-overs. Students brought photos and spent a day with CFI Education volunteers shooting short video clips of their neighborhoods to enhance their stories. The next day, the students spend their time editing their films using Final Cut Express. By the end of the workshop. participants leave with the basics of filmmaking and editing to share with the world their amazing stories.
